Negotiating Alternative Masculinities in Men’s Magazines: Transitivity in the Formation of Counter Hegemonic Identities

With social transformation and male empowerment, the archetypes of traditional masculinity are being deconstructed rendered obsolete. The changing view demands for an exploration how popular media, particularly men’s magazines rewrite discourse masculinity. Attempting to answer overarching question ‘what does mean today?’, this paper explores identity as a linguistic phenomenon. Drawing on both Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) Halliday’s Transitivity system Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) frameworks, we examine ideational meanings realised by lexicogrammatical selections discourse-semantic-choice involving process types participants’ role that form counter hegemonic masculinities. This study argues men negotiate their identities, play critical in challenging patriarchal normalising alternative masculine practices via ideologies embedded text. investigation focuses transitivity is  drawn produce formations different enactments masculinities articulated magazine texts present forms identities. from 584,600-word corpus selected titles published 2016 2020, findings revealed use material, mental, relational behavioural processes manifests identities or non-traditional representation.
